Newport 2008 News and Updates

August 8, 2008

We have some last minute scheduling updates for the dance week:

Tuesday evening's schedule has changed. On Tuesday evening we will be screening the movie The Whirl of Life. Filmed in 1915, it is an autobiographical version of the life of Vernon and Irene Castle. The film will be presented by Marc Casslar who will be teaching dances from the film in his afternoon specialty class. The Film will be followed by informal dancing to recorded music led by Mr. Casslar. Dancing can start as soon as the chairs from the movie are cleared.

Updates for Wednesday: The Vintage Swap & Sell has been moved to Wednesday afternoon: The Vintage Swap and Sell will be held Wednesday afternoon in the Auditorium. Everyone is welcome to bring items to sell or trade. You might find what you have always wanted to complete that vintage outfit, or something you never knew you needed, to add to the pile of stuff in your room. Really, you need it. Please see Barbara Pugliese or Katy Bishop if you need table space, email newport@vintagedancers.org in advance of the week if at all possible. During the Swap & Sell tea and cookies will be available in the Winter Garden.

Dear Newport 2008 Participants,
Stay tuned to this page for updated information as the week rapidly approaches.

We are getting close to the start of the Dance Week, and we are sending out a request for some information in advance to aid us in ensuring that the week runs smoothly.

Dinner Selections Needed
Orders for entrees for Tuesday’s New England Dinner and Saturday’s Rail and Sail event must be made in advance of our arrival. Please return your Reply Form (pdf) as soon as possible so we can confirm your menu choices with the chefs. You may also email your choices to: to expedite the matter. We need the reply forms by Aug. 1. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Swap & Sell Table Space
The Vintage Swap & Sell will take place Tuesday evening after the New England dinner. If you are planning on bringing items to sell or trade that evening, and would like some table space reserved for you, it would simplify our set-up if you could let us know in advance. Please let us know how much space you need (a full table, 1/2, 1/3, 2 tables, etc...). Please e-mail: with your request.

Sunday Dinner
We also want to remind you that if you are arriving Sunday, dinner is served from 5:30-6:30 pm. Registration will not be open during dinner. If you are arriving later than 6:30pm, you are advised to get dinner on the road, as there is nothing available on campus.

The website has been updated, please visit the Overview of 2008 events page for descriptions of this year's weekly schedule.

Dear Dancer,

February 26, 2008

It is with great pleasure that the Commonwealth Vintage Dancers announce the 21st Newport Vintage Dance Week to be held August 11-17, 2008 (with optional early arrival Aug. 10).

As is our tradition, we have been busy lining up instructors and planning events, bringing back some favorites and introducing some for the first time at Newport. Our distinctive staff this year will include:
    Marc Casslar (Hartford, CT)
Barbara and Antonia Pugliese (Boston, MA)
    Yvonne Vart (France)
    Joan Walton (San Francisco, CA)

Our special events will include an elegant lunch on a train leaving from campus and taking us to Newport, where we will board the Harbor Queen for a tour of Newport Harbor, before taking a train back to campus. We return to some of our favorite venues for the evening balls: Astors' Beechwood, Glen Manor, and the Rotunda Ballroom at Easton’s Beach.

Our other big news is that we have been informed by the Portsmouth Abbey School that 2008 is the last year the dance week will be held at Portsmouth Abbey. The school intends to restart its summer school and expand their sports offerings for middle and high school students in 2009. So, will this be the last Newport Dance Week? We hope not. We are looking for another site, but at this time we do not have anything lined up. So, if you want one more chance to stroll the peaceful Portsmouth Abbey campus and get your Newport fix, be sure to join us for this year’s dance week.

A registration note: Brochures will be mailed in the next few weeks. The '08 Registration Form is available now on our website: . Please be aware that registration will be conducted in the same manner as last year: we will accept 40 couples initially (persons of the opposite sex registering together). Additional couples and persons registering without a registration partner will be placed in lotteries to be held April 19th.

For those anxious to get started on their costume for Saturday night’s ball, this year’s Fancy Dress Ball theme is:

Egyptomania!!!

So save the dates and look for additional information in your mailbox or on the CVD website soon. Hope to see you in Newport in August!

Warm regards,

Hannah Roberts Artuso
Co-Director CVD
