NEWPORT DANCE WEEK 2007

PACK YOUR BAGS!
The dates for
THE NEWPORT VINTAGE DANCE WEEK
are August 6th to the 12th
(with optional accommodations for Sunday the 5th)

We are working hard to organize a magical and fun-filled week of dancing and entertainments as we celebrate the 20th Newport Vintage Dance Week. The conference will once again be held on the campus of Portsmouth Abbey School, located on 500 idyllic acres at the edge of Narragansett Bay, just north of Newport and next door to The Green Animals Topiary.
We are delighted to welcome Marc Casslar, Susan de Guardiola, Richard Powers, Antonia Pugliese, Barbara Pugliese and Joan Walton as instructors. The focus of the classes will be the dances from the mid-Nineteenth through the Early Twentieth Centuries.
We will be offering balls in some of America’s most elegant and splendid ballrooms. The lovely Astor’s Beechwood will host the 1890’s soirée on Wednesday evening, the formal dinner and Ragtime ball will be at Glen Manor House and the mid-19th Century ball will be returning to Ochre Court, the original site of our 19th century balls at the Dance Week. Live music for all three evenings will be provided by the New River Dance Orchestra. The theme for the final night’s fancy dress ball will be Celestial Worlds.
Other events scheduled during the week include an optional group tour of one of the Gilded Age mansions, afternoon teas, a formal dinner, a New England lobster fest, outings, informal lectures on period topics and a vintage swap and sell.

Moving Picture Evening

Join us once again on a trip to the "Newport Orpheum Cinema" as we present a silent film accompanied by an abundance of popcorn and cold drinks. No reservations required. Dress is casual or period casual. The movie will be followed by informal dancing to recorded music of the teens and twenties.

TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY FANCY DRESS BALL

To celebrate 20 years of Newport Dance Weeks, The Commonwealth Vintage Dancers invites you to join us, as many did twenty years ago, at the Celestial Worlds Ball. Have you ever wanted to be a planet, a moon, a comet, an asteroid? Perhaps you just want to visit new worlds. Or are you happier observing from afar. Come and dance among the stars to the music of the spheres at the Celestial Worlds Ball.

Newport Vintage Costume Workshop

This year's vintage costume workshop on Monday will be: Finishing Touches: Period Dress Trimmings. Bring your gown(s) and flowers, ribbons, lace and beadwork and get an over view of appropriate trims for evening dresses 1850-1920. Some trims will be available at the workshop, but we ask that you bring your own supplies if possible. Donations of supples are also welcomed.

Memories Wanted
for the
20th Anniversary Celebration

We are always searching for interesting photographs of the various events at Newport and other CVD events for inclusion in publicity materials and for placement on our web page. This year we are have a special mission, this year we are looking for photographs of the past. The Dance Week’s 20th anniversary will be celebrated this year. We are beginning to organize a retrospective web-page, so any photos and remembrances of Newports past are needed. If you have any photos, mementos, stories or memories to share that you think would be appropriate, please send them to: Katy Bishop, P. O. Box 9, Nahant, MA 01908, attn.: Newport 20th.

Conference Fee to Increase in 2007

CVD has been advised by the Portsmouth Abbey School that the fees they have been charging have not kept up with actual costs. Therefore, to cover these costs, as well as the increases in other event costs, we regret there must necessarily be a somewhat larger increase in the conference tuition than usual. We are in the process of setting the fees and hope to announce them shortly. While we are doing everything we can to limit the increase as much as possible, we wanted to let you know about the increase now, so you can plan for it. As usual, the fee covers all classes, events, room and board throughout the week. The only additional, optional, charges will be for those who wish to arrive Sunday, August 5th for early check-in or join the mansion tour. We think the week will still be a bargain! Those wanting to register now may do so by sending a deposit of $100 per person to the address below. The first 40 couples will be accepted on a first-come basis based upon receipt of the deposit. Additional couples and those applying without a registration partner will be in a lottery to be held April 21. All deposits are fully refundable until July 1. Visit our website (see below) for an on-line registration form.

Ochre Court Ball Fundraiser Planned

Having had many requests since the dance week left the Salve Regina University campus to return there for a ball in gilded Ochre Court, we are delighted to do so as part of our Newport Dance Week 20th Anniversary celebration! However, as the rental fee is more than double what is usually budgeted for a hall rental during the dance week, CVD will soon kick-off a fundraising campaign to help defray the cost of the hall. (The conference fees, when they are announced, will anticipate success in this endeavor, and will not include the full cost of the hall.) So we hope when you receive your letter, you will consider a donation to the effort. All contributions are tax deductible as CVD is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. If you’d like to make a contribution now and save us mailing a letter, please mail your donation to the address below.
