Dancing at the Ball: Early nineteenth century dance is based on country dances with
sprightly steps. All steps and patterns will be taught during the ball by our capable preceptor, Antonia Pugliese. During the
evening, we will step a few years out of 1811 to include very early waltzes and early galops. We want everyone to experience the
fun of dancing in a ballroom of people performing the real steps, but we will also have a few sets where those who cannot do bouncy
steps can walk through the patterns.
Music at the Ball: We are pleased to announce that the music will be provided by Jaqueline
Schwab and Eden MacAdam-Somer.
Schedule of Events: There will be a free dance workshop from 4 to 6 in the afternoon
before the dance, also at the Old Town Hall. There is no charge for the workshop. Antonia Pugliese will teach the dances that will be done later at the ball. The workshop is a perfect opportunity
to become comfortable with the dancing, but if you cannot attend the workshop, don’t worry. The dances will be taught during the
ball and are easy enough that they can be picked up by most dancers. A supper break will allow you to patronize one of the many
local restaurants. The ball will begin at 8pm.
Clothing: We suggest that women wear simple dresses reminiscent of
Regency ballgowns. Men should wear regency style suits, military uniforms, tailcoats or modern suits. Shoes
should be clean, preferably with leather soles. Modern high heels should be avoided. They are inappropriate for
this period and will make it difficult for you to dance. For additional costume inspiration you might want to
read Antonia's Blog, whwre she has description and
pictures of how to achieve a period look.

About the Hall The ball will take place at the Salem Old Town Hall, 32 Derby Square, Salem, MA. This lovely brick building was built in
1816, mere years after the publication of Sense and Sensibility. It is located between the Essex Street pedestrian mall and
Front Street. Salem has a variety of casual and formal dining, and has public transit access.
Directions Salem is on the Newburyport/Rockport
commuter rail line leaving from North Station. If you are driving and use a GPS, enter the address of 18 Front Street. If you
accidentally enter Derby Street rather than Derby Square, your GPS will take you far away from the actual location of the hall
Directions to the hall can be found here.
Parking: There is plenty of on-street parking in Salem, but you will have to feed meters
until 5 or 6 pm. Salem parking meters take nickels, dimes and quarters. There are parking lots on Front Street and Sewell (Lynde)
Street but you will have to feed meters until 9 pm. The Museum Place garage at New Liberty Street costs $1.50 per hour with a max
of $12.00. There is also a parking lot in the same area on Church Street which costs the same amount. The parking garage and Church
Street lot accept cash and credit cards. The Salem Parking website says that the Bridge Street parking lot near the Commuter Rail
is free on Saturdays.
