About the Hall and Directions
The ball will take place at the Salem Old Town Hall, a Federal Style Building, the earliest surviving municipal structure in Salem dating from 1816-17. The second floor of the building, the Great Hall, has always been used as a public hall. Directions to the hall can be found here.

Parking:
There are parking lots in the area and on-street parking is free after 5 pm weeknights, ther is a large parking garage near the Peabody Essex Museum. There is a commuter rail from Boston’s North Station to Salem. The final run from Salem back to Boston is at 11:24 pm Friday, 10:30 Saturday. For parking consult the City of Salem website

Dancing at the Civil War Ball:
Much of the program will consist of set dances which will be taught during the evening. These will include such Victorian favorites as Pop Goes the Weasel, other easy contradances and simple quadrilles. Interspersed with these will be elegant couple dances such as the waltz and polka.

Clothing:
Modern evening dress or costume from the Civil War Era is requested but not required. Ballet slippers or low heeled shoes are recommended; for men we suggest comfortable shoes with leather soles. More information on period costuming is available on our costuming page Changing space is limited. We suggest you arrive in your costume if possible; a very small changing room will be available for last-minute adjustments. The hall will open at 7pm.

Vintage Dance Lyceum:
This month we will be learning Advanced 19th Century dances. Have you attended vintage balls or dance workshops and always wished you could learn more? Maybe you’ve enjoyed modern ballroom or swing classes, or a modern contra dance, and wondered where those dances came from? If so, the Vintage Dance Lyceum is for you! Dance instruction will be by Barbara M. Pugliese. The Vintage Dance Lyceum will be held Sunday evenings from 6 to 8pm, at The Acrobatic Rock and Roll Dance Academy 738 Main Street, Waltham, MA. You can visit the Lyceum Page for complete information. There is no charge for the classes, but you must register in advance by on-line or by calling (617)  819-4283 or email
